From the Rector

Dear Friends,

Every time I enter the nave of St. Mary’s or look at its peaks and spires outside, I am moved by the truly unique beauty of this place. I have said that churches are like cars—they all do the same thing, essentially, but each one looks and “drives” differently from the others. However, it is at this time of year that I think our church shines like the Christmas star. Recently I received an envelope in the mail filled with old photographs from Tuxedo Park, including houses, lakes, the club, and our church. It was heartwarming to see in one of the photos that we haven’t changed our Christmas décor in over 60 years. No doubt it goes back even further. Christmas is indeed a time when we take comfort in the traditions of the past, handed down over many generations. At a time of year when the darkness is long, and in the midst of the changes and chances of this life, they give us a sense of centering, place, belonging, and hope for a brighter new year.

As we make our pilgrimage to St. Mary’s this Christmas, we can take comfort in knowing that we are joining with other Christians all over the world, with the communion of saints, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven in adoring the babe in the manger. I pray for safe travels for all of our members who are traveling this year, and for God’s blessing on us all.
