From the RectorDear Parishioners and Friends, Due to the lingering effects of a bad case of retinopathy in 2019, I have periodic visits to the ophthalmologist. While I really like my doctor and her staff, I dread the exam process, which invariably involves dilating my eyes. While I was resting and regaining my normal sight this afternoon after today's exam, news came of a moment of great clarity from Rome--a new pope had been elected in a relatively short amount of time, and he is an American, something common wisdom said would never happen. Having been part of several Episcopal elections, I can say that the air is electric as the will of God and the workings of the Holy Spirit become ever clearer until someone is finally chosen. We have been praying for the cardinals in conclave, and will now continue to pray for Pope Leo XIV as he takes up leadership of a global Church. The choice of his papal name is significant. Pope Leo XIII reigned from 1878 to 1903. His reign was marked by his care for the poor and working classes. His encyclical "Rerum Novarum" is the founding document of Catholic social teaching. By choosing the name Leo, the new pope has given the world an early clue as to where the emphasis of his ministry will lie, not deviating far from the vision of his immediate predecessor. Closer to home, we are preparing to say farewell to one of our own beloved bishops, the Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool, who is retiring. Bishop Glasspool has been no stranger to St. Mary's, and is admired for her calm leadership and strong pastoral presence. There will be an official farewell service and celebration at the cathedral on May 31 (details below). Pete and I are sad that we cannot make it, as we will be on pilgrimage in Turkey at that time. However, I do hope that some from our congregation will be able to go and wish Bishop Mary well as she and Becky begin retirement. Blessings,
