From the RectorDear Parishioners and Friends, Today at the Wednesday service we kept the feast of the Annunciation. We heard the account from the gospel of St. Luke about the angel Gabriel delivering God's invitation to the young woman Mary to be an integral part of his plan for the salvation of mankind. More to the point, we heard Mary say "yes." St Luke is a painter of words, but this scene is also one of the most frequently depicted events from the Bible. Countless artists have created icons and paintings of it. Those of us who are fortunate enough to worship at St. Mary's also get to see it represented in bas relief every time we approach the high altar. Our version (and the surrounding sculptures), see below, are the work of the renowned American architect Bertram Goodhue (1869-1924). The project at St. Mary's was completed in 1922, just two years before Goodhue's untimely death at age 54. He was a master of the gothic and Spanish revival styles, and his works span the length and breadth of the country.
