From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

It has been an exciting start to the season of Lent here at St. Mary's. Last week we welcomed our Bishop Diocesan, the Rt. Rev. Matt Heyd. Bishop Heyd preached and celebrated the Holy Eucharist, and I led the congregation in the stirring Great Litany. The children of the Sunday School sang "Jesus Loves Me" for the Bishop, who said that he never knew that there was a second verse! It was also Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) Sunday, and thanks to our Outreach committee and your generous donations, St. Mary's is sending $2,000 to that organization for relief in areas hit by natural disasters and other catastrophes.

We also began our book study of "How We Learn to Be Brave," by Bishop Marianne Budde of the Diocese of Washington. A group met to discuss the book and other topics over a shared meal at the rectory. It's not too late to join in, as we will be meeting three more times, Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. Please bring something light to share. Even if you can't join the book group, I still commend reading the book on your own.

Lenten Learning Series

From March 12th to April 9th, we will meet each Wednesday at 6pm in the Rectory for a book group and pot luck dinner. Several of you have expressed an interest in reading Bishop Budde’s latest book, so we will be reading and discussing How We Learn To Be Brave. Please purchase your copy wherever books are sold and join us.

Sunday School

The formation of children is a critical part of our mission. Service in church helps them learn about responsibility, charity, and self-sacrifice. Children are welcome to participate in our programs and/or attend church services with their parents. Under age 5, there is a a fun childcare program. Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome to attend Sunday School. Those 10 and older are encouraged to participate in the service as acolytes or readers.
